Using Wood-Mizer machines, forester Moritz Rott is building a thriving sawmilling business on his family farm in Klein Breese, Germany, producing custom timber from regional oak logs for local customers.

On a quiet farm in Klein Breese in Germany’s Wendland region, Moritz Rott has built a modern sawmilling business rooted in family tradition. The property, once dedicated mainly to agriculture, has gradually taken on a new role: a place where timber is processed and new ideas take shape.

Moritz is a trained forester who works in public service, but whenever time allows, he returns to the farm where his family still lives. The former agricultural buildings now house his workshop, wood storage, and machinery - an ideal environment for woodworking and small-scale sawmilling.

His journey into the timber business began with splitting and selling firewood through contacts in roundwood purchasing. In 2021, he took the first real step into sawmilling by purchasing a Wood-Mizer LX50SUPER and registering a small side business. What started with small projects for friends and local customers quickly grew.

As demand increased, Moritz expanded his operation. In June 2024, he invested in a Wood-Mizer LT20START with hydraulics and converted his side business into a full commercial enterprise. The hydraulic system allows him to load and position logs independently, making daily work significantly more efficient.

Today, the LT20START operates under a custom-built shelter behind the barn. Moritz spends about three days a week cutting logs for customers or producing timber for his own projects. Additional woodworking machines in the barn allow him to further process the lumber.

Most of the roundwood comes from regional forests, especially oak. From it, Moritz produces a wide range of products - from benches, tables, and fences to hunting stands and carports.

What once was a traditional farm is now evolving into a place where craftsmanship, forestry, and entrepreneurship come together - one log at a time.
